If a channel is no longer active but you still want to keep its messages, you can archive a Slack channel instead of deleting it. This keeps everything saved while removing it from active use.
Archive a channel in Slack
Follow these steps in Slack:
- Open Slack and go to the channel you want to archive
- Click on the channel name at the top
- Go to the Settings tab
- Scroll down and click Archive channel
- Confirm by clicking Yes, archive the channel
The channel will be removed from your active channel list, but its messages will remain saved.
Who can archive a channel?
- Workspace admins and owners can archive any channel
- Regular members can archive channels they created (depending on permissions)
What happens after archiving?
- The channel becomes read-only
- No new messages can be sent
- Files and message history are saved and searchable
- You can unarchive it later if needed
How to unarchive a Slack channel
If you need the channel again:
- Search for the archived channel
- Open it
- Click Unarchive channel
Quick tip
Before archiving, make sure no important discussions are still active, as members won’t be able to send messages afterward.
