If your document formatting looks off or pages are behaving differently, there’s a good chance a section break is causing it. Removing section breaks in Google Docs is simple once you know where to look.
Show section breaks first
Before removing them, you need to make them visible:
- Open your document
- Click on View in the top menu
- Select Show section breaks
You’ll now see where section breaks are placed in your document.
Remove a section break
Once you can see it, follow these steps:
- Click just before the section break line
- Press Delete (or Backspace)
The section break will be removed, and the sections will merge.
Alternative way (if it doesn’t delete)
Sometimes the break doesn’t remove easily:
- Place your cursor right after the section break
- Press Backspace instead
This usually works if the first method doesn’t.
What happens after removing a section break
- Formatting between sections may combine
- Headers/footers can change
- Page layout may adjust automatically
So it’s a good idea to review your document after removing it.
Quick tip
If your formatting suddenly changes and you’re not sure why, section breaks are often the reason. Turning on Show section breaks helps you spot the issue quickly.
