How to Archive a Slack Channel

If a channel is no longer active but you still want to keep its messages, you can archive a Slack channel instead of deleting it. This keeps everything saved while removing it from active use.

Archive a channel in Slack

Follow these steps in Slack:

  1. Open Slack and go to the channel you want to archive
  2. Click on the channel name at the top
  3. Go to the Settings tab
  4. Scroll down and click Archive channel
  5. Confirm by clicking Yes, archive the channel

The channel will be removed from your active channel list, but its messages will remain saved.

Who can archive a channel?

  • Workspace admins and owners can archive any channel
  • Regular members can archive channels they created (depending on permissions)

What happens after archiving?

  • The channel becomes read-only
  • No new messages can be sent
  • Files and message history are saved and searchable
  • You can unarchive it later if needed

How to unarchive a Slack channel

If you need the channel again:

  1. Search for the archived channel
  2. Open it
  3. Click Unarchive channel

Quick tip

Before archiving, make sure no important discussions are still active, as members won’t be able to send messages afterward.
