If you want to analyze a video closely or pause at the exact moment, you can go frame by frame on YouTube using simple keyboard shortcuts. This is especially useful for tutorials, edits, or detailed viewing.
Use keyboard shortcuts
You can move frame by frame in YouTube using these keys:
- Play the video
- Press Spacebar to pause
- Press . (period) to move forward one frame
- Press , (comma) to move backward one frame
👉 Each press moves the video by a single frame.
Important note
- Frame-by-frame only works when the video is paused
- These shortcuts work on desktop (laptop/PC), not on mobile apps
Alternative: Slow playback (if frame control isn’t needed)
If you don’t need exact frames:
- Click on the Settings (gear icon)
- Select Playback speed
- Choose a slower speed like 0.25x
This helps you watch details more clearly, though it’s not frame-accurate.
Why use frame-by-frame
- Analyze fast-moving scenes
- Capture the exact moment in a video
- Study tutorials or technical content
- Review edits or animations
Quick tip
If the shortcut doesn’t work, click once on the video player to make sure it’s active, then try again.
